  • AR-15: This Is the semi-automatic civilian version of the M-16 and M-4 rifle.
  • Ballistic Wampum: Extra ammunition stored to use for trade.
  • B.O.B: (See Bug-Out Bag)
  • BOL: Bug out Location, a preplanned position to retreat to, other than your home, if you had to escape danger or disaster.
  • BOV: Bug-Out Vehicle. A vehicle you can use to get yourself out of town in case of a disaster.
  • Bug Out Bag (aka BOB)A bug out bag is backpack or other style bag (Ie. duffle bag) that contains all of the necessities you would need to survive after a disaster. Your BOB allows you to take what you need with you quickly and evacuate should a disaster occur. Most people keep enough gear to last 72 hours, but since most disasters can disrupt services for longer than 72 hrs, I think its a good idea to have a bag that will allow you to survive indefinitely. Common items to carry include MRE's, protein bars, fire starters, first aid kit, water, water filters, maps, cash, firearms, ammo, sleeping bags, emergency medicine, shelter (tent, poncho, tarp), clothing, fishing kit, snares and copies of personal identification (photos of passports, drivers licenses, social security card etc).
  • Bugging In: hunkering down, staying at your location until it is safer to bug out!
  • Bugging Out: leaving your current position and moving to a safer location.
  • Camo: Slang for Camouflage
  • Carrington Event: A naturally occurring EMP – like effect caused by a large Coronal Mass
  • Ejection (CME) of the Sun. (See CME and EMP)
  • Civie: This is US Military slang for civilian.
  • CME Coronal Mass Ejection. (Solar flares.) See EMP.
  • CODEX: Newly developed food standards which my adversely affect modern farmers and the seek to control food supply.
  • DIY: Acronym for Do It Yourself
  • Doomer: (See Peak Oil) Someone who believes peak oil is coming and that it will result in a breakdown of social order.
  • EDC: Everyday carry, what a person caries on them on a daily basis.
  • EMP: Electro-magnetic pulse. It comes from a detonated nuke and ruins electronics.
  • EOTW: End of the world. Term used to describe a widespread disaster that will permanently alter society.
  • ETA: Estimated time of arrival
  • FAK: First Aid Kit.
  • Faraday Cage: is a metallic enclosure that protects your electronics from an EMP.
  • FDA: Food and Drug Administration
  • FEMA: Federal Emergency Management Agency
  • FIFO: First In, First Out—used for food storage rotation.
  • G.O.O.D: Get Out of Dodge. To flee the city in case of a major disaster.
  • G.O.O.D. Kit: Get Out of Dodge Kit. Basically a Bug-Out Bag but on a larger scale.
  • Genny: Slang for a generator
  • GMO: Genetically Modified Organism
  • GO bag: see Bug Out Bag
  • Goblin: A criminal/looter in a survival situation.
  • Golden Horde: The horde of looters and refugees that will spill out of the city and into the country after the SHTF.
  • GWOT: Global War on Terror
  • H5N1: The CDC's designation for one of the current strains of the Asian Avian Flu
  • Ham: A slang term for amateur radio operators.
  • HEMP: High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse. See EMP.
  • IFAK: Individual First Aid Kit
  • INCH: "I'm never coming home" code for family if you have to bug out so they don't stay waiting for you.
  • INCH Bag: I'm Never Coming Home Bag. A bag with supplies needed to sustain oneself indefinitely in case returning home is impossible.
  • JIC: Just In Case
  • M.A.G: Mutual Aid Group, made up of individuals in a specific geographic area. These individuals meet for the purpose of discussing, sharing ideas and planning for emergencies in their area.
  • Main Battle Rifle
  • MRE: Meal Ready To Eat. (US military field rations)
  • Multi-tool: This is a combination of a survival knife and a wide assortment of other tools (pliers, saw, wire cutters are some examples).
  • NBC: Nuclear, Biological, Chemical
  • OPSEC: Operational Security
  • P.E.R.K: Personal Emergency Relocation Kit.
  • Peak Oil: the point in time when the world's oil supplies go into irreversible decline
  • Pollyanna or Polly: Someone in denial about the possibility of a major disaster.
  • Prep: This is slang for prepare.
  • Prepper: The same as "survivalist." Someone who makes preparations so that emergencies will have a minimal impact on his or her lifestyle.
  • Preps: This is slang for preparations.
  • PSK: Personal Survival Kit
  • Root Cellar: Underground storage area used for food and/or shelter. Common among Preppers.
  • SHTF: Sh*t hits the Fan. This means that some kind of catastrophic event has happened. (natural disaster, financial collapse, terrorist attack)
  • Survival Dog: A canine who has been trained with specific traits that would be helpful in survival situation.
  • Survival Gear: Any piece of equipment used to aid in prolonging the life of a human being (particularly in survival situations).
  • Survival Retreat: A property that is stocked with everything you need to survive the EOTW.
  • Survival: Essentially means "to be alive" or "to exist". Can also be used to describe avoidance of death.
  • Survivalism: The process and practice of becoming prepared for unforeseen circumstances.
  • Survivalist: One who practices "survivalism"
  • TEOTWAWKI: The End of the World as We Know It. See "EOTW."
  • TPTB: The Powers That Be. Generic term for the people who control the economy/government.
  • WROL: Without Rule of Law A time when police, military, etc have lost control. A lawless situation.
  • WTSHTF: When the Shit Hits the Fan. See "SHTF."
  • Zombie: The name for the unprepared and often aggressive masses who will want to take what you have.
